José Humberto Bastidas Pantoja was born on April 16, 1980, in Samaniego, Nariño. At the age of 24, he and his late father planted a small plot of Caturra coffee, igniting a passion for coffee cultivation that José inherited from his father. His father’s love for coffee farming deeply influenced José, setting him on a path that would define his life. From a young age, José dedicated himself to coffee cultivation on the Cabuyal estate in the Cabuyal village of Samaniego Municipality. His commitment to the craft was evident in every aspect of his work. José’s family plays a crucial role in supporting his endeavors. His wife, Luz Elena Ortega Madroñero, and their daughter, Cristina Bastidas Ortega, assist with various tasks on the farm. His mother, María Inés Pantoja, and his sister, Rosa Elena Bastidas, are instrumental in coffee harvesting and other essential farm activities. As a dedicated and committed coffee grower, José Bastidas has embraced quality and agronomic practices. The extension service has provided him with valuable training, including information about a quality competition, which motivated him to participate and showcase his coffee. In the short term, José’s plans include expanding his coffee plantation without depleting natural resources and constructing a processing facility and drying area. In the long term, he aims to deepen his knowledge of agronomic and quality practices, achieve sustainability for his farm, and establish commercial links for coffee export. José Humberto Bastidas Pantoja’s journey reflects a profound dedication to coffee cultivation, guided by a legacy of passion and a commitment to continuous improvement. His vision for the future is not only to enhance his farm but also to make a lasting impact in the world of coffee.
