In the Sumapaz region, in the Bochica district of Fusagasugá, a family tradition began that has endured for generations. In the late 19th century, my great-grandparents, alongside families like the Vergaras, Velandias, and Urregos, arrived in these wild lands, drawn by the promise of fertile soil and a life connected to nature. The mountainous landscape, rich with untouched jungle, provided everything needed for survival: abundant water, game, and a wealth of natural resources that captivated them, motivating them to settle and establish what we now know as El Diamante farm. Under the majestic Cerro Pico de Plata, my ancestors worked tirelessly to tame the rocky and cold terrain, overcoming challenges with creativity and community effort. Collective work gatherings, known as mingas, helped clear stones and create protective pyramids for the crops, optimizing their land. Although they never envisioned becoming coffee growers, life in this region brought the unexpected opportunity to cultivate coffee—a story that would unfold years later. Though coffee was not initially the farm's main focus, we discovered some abandoned coffee plants. My father and I harvested their fruit, unaware of how many years they had been there. We learned that they were of the Típica Arábica variety, resilient and long-lived. However, at that time, coffee production yielded little income, and we sold only small amounts of dried coffee. Despite facing challenges such as high altitude, cold weather, and limited resources, my passion for coffee drove me to persevere. With the help of the Cundinamarca Coffee Growers Committee, we renewed the farm with the Castillo variety. Throughout this process, the extension service of the National Federation of Coffee Growers played a key role, providing guidance at every step. What began as a simple crop transformed into a success story when, at the first National Quality Contest "Colombia, Tierra de Diversidad," our coffee was recognized as the second best in the country for its acidity and the third best price at the national auction. This recognition revealed that El Diamante holds a treasure in its soil: a unique combination of nutrition and environmental offerings that give our coffee an unparalleled flavor. Today, my dream is to continue improving the quality of our coffee, aiming to be the best in Colombia. This journey motivates me to protect the legacy of coffee cultivation and the land that has given us so much, from its flora and fauna to the pure water springing from Cerro Pico de Plata. From El Diamante, I send greetings to all young coffee growers in Cundinamarca and Colombia, encouraging them to cherish this beautiful coffee culture that brings triumphs, joy, and immense satisfaction.
