From a young age, José MartÃnez was drawn to the fields, finding work as a coffee picker in various departments. It was during these early years that his dream took root. As he witnessed the beauty and potential of thriving coffee plantations, he envisioned having a farm of his own. Thirty years ago, that vision became a reality when he purchased his own estate and began planting Caturra and Colombia coffee varieties.
José’s life took another significant turn when he married Olga, and together they raised two daughters, Tatiana and Lina. With the support and help of his family, José made a pivotal change in his cultivation. He transitioned to growing Castillo and Cenicafé 1, varieties that are better suited to the local conditions and promise even higher quality coffee.
The fruits of their hard work have been plentiful. The income from their coffee has allowed José and Olga to build a home, provide an education for their daughters—Lina, who is now a psychologist, and Tatiana, an auxiliary in dentistry—and fulfill other dreams, such as owning a motorcycle and a truck. The arrival of their granddaughter, Antonella, has brought even more joy to their lives, adding a new chapter of happiness to their story.
José and his family, along with a few neighbors, work together on the farm, embodying a strong sense of community and collaboration. Reflecting on his journey, José feels a profound sense of accomplishment. He has achieved many of his dreams, including becoming his own boss and seeing his daughters succeed in their careers.
Looking to the future, José’s vision as a coffee grower is clear. He aims to acquire a mechanical dryer, expand his coffee crops with more resistant varieties, and continually improve the quality of Colombian coffee. For José MartÃnez, the path of coffee cultivation has been one of dedication, growth, and the realization of dreams, with the promise of more to come as he continues to nurture his legacy.
