In the verdant hills of Huila, Colombia, where the mist kisses the coffee plants and the sun bathes the landscape in golden light, there lies a testament to passion, perseverance, and family—the Finca Buenos Aires. This coffee farm, nurtured by the hands of the Guzmán family for 37 years, is more than just a place where coffee grows; it is the heart of a legacy that blends tradition with ambition. As the fourth of eight siblings, I grew up surrounded by the rich aroma of coffee. My father, a devoted caficultor, instilled in me a love for the coffee cultivation that was more than just a profession—it was a way of life. From a young age, after school, I would accompany my father to the fields, harvesting coffee and dreaming of one day growing my own. To motivate me, he would reward me with money for sweets on weekends, a small but cherished gesture that fueled my enthusiasm. When I was old enough, my father gifted me a precious treasure—1,000 coffee trees of the Caturra variety. This initial investment was the seed that allowed me to purchase another 2,000 trees. As I nurtured these plants, my journey as a caficultor began to unfold. Over the years, through dedication and hard work, I built upon this foundation, and the legacy of coffee became an integral part of my life. My story took a beautiful turn when I met Luz Enith Rojas. Together, we built not just a life but a family and a thriving coffee enterprise. For 23 years, Finca Buenos Aires has been a testament to our combined efforts, unwavering dedication, and love for coffee. We have three wonderful children and a cherished grandson who bring joy and motivation to our lives. Vanessa, our eldest at 22, is a technician in “Estilismo y belleza,” while Santiago, 15, and Sofía, 13, are dedicated high school students. Our younger children are part of the “Generational Transfer” program, immersing themselves in barista skills, tasting, and cultivation. Their enthusiasm for the coffee world gives us hope and pride. Our two-year-old grandson, David, is the little darling of our home, adding an extra layer of joy to our daily lives. Running the farm is a collaborative effort. Don Silvio Hoyos, a trusted worker, manages the harvest, processing area, and various agronomic tasks in my absence. His dedication ensures the smooth operation of the farm, and I trust him completely. As we often say, “When we work with love and responsibility, everyone benefits.” During peak harvest, we have up to ten workers, and Luz Enith plays a crucial role, preparing meals for everyone and even helping with the coffee picking during her free time. Looking to the future, we envision Finca Buenos Aires becoming a premier coffee producer, renowned for the quality of our beans and our commitment to the environment. We are constantly improving our processes and facilities, striving to enhance quality and sustainability. I actively participate in all the training sessions offered by the coffee committee, including the current “Research and Development Project to Enhance Coffee Production in Agroecological Zones of Huila.” Our plans for the future include upgrading the farm’s infrastructure to simplify operations. With no direct access roads to the finca, we aim to build a cable car, complete the processing area, set up a drying guardiola, and construct a cabin for family and visitors. The panoramic view of the coffee landscape from our farm is nothing short of breathtaking, and we hope to share this beauty with others. Finca Buenos Aires is not just a coffee farm; it is a living legacy, a symbol of family unity, and a beacon of sustainable coffee cultivation. As we continue to grow and evolve, we remain grounded in the values that have shaped our journey—a passion for coffee, a commitment to quality, and an enduring love for the land and family that make it all possible.
