Finca El Rubí, a heritage of my parents Segundo Lazo and Stella Ojeda, who with great dedication and effort, in 1995, managed to purchase this farm that consists of 4 hectares, located in the municipality of Acevedo, Huila, in the San Adolfo inspection. My name is Heiner Lasso, and following in my father’s footsteps, at the age of 18, after finishing my high school studies, I dedicated myself to working on the land, cultivating coffee. The land had approximately 5,000 trees of the Caturra variety, and we were enjoying very good production, thanks to God, until 2003 when the coffee crisis hit due to the appearance of coffee leaf rust, which wiped out almost all the coffee crops. This left all coffee growers, including my father, very worried since it was our family's livelihood. We then decided to renew the plot, buying seeds from various places whose origins were unknown, supposedly of the Castilla variety, which was said to be resistant to rust, but it turned out to be another variety. Unfortunately, we had a bad experience with this variety because it has low productivity, and that year the price for selling coffee was very low. It was at that point, feeling inexperienced, that I decided to train by taking courses at SENA (National Learning Service). I took a course on specialty coffee production and another on pest and disease control. I also took courses on coffee analysis and sensory evaluation. Once again, we renewed the plot, this time planting different varieties such as Caturra Chiroso, Gesha, Bourbon Rosado, Bourbon Sidra, and SL 28, keeping in mind that they were not resistant to rust but offered the possibility of selling at a better price. Thank God, things have gone very well for me, and I have served as an example for some coffee growers who, like me, are also cultivating these varieties. Today, my municipality of Acevedo is recognized and considered one of the best producers of specialty coffee. Who makes up my family? I share it with my wife Yohanna Castellanos and my two children, Luciana Lasso and Emiliano Lasso. We work the farm as a family, along with neighbors from the region.
