104 kilometers separate Bucaramanga from San Andrés, a small municipality in Santander located between steep mountains and rugged soils, home to Daniel Reátiga, a coffee grower for 15 years and a guild leader of the National Federation of Coffee Growers. Daniel lives on the Los Yátagos farm, in the Carabalí village. To get there, one must travel for approximately 30 minutes on an unpaved road (by car) and then walk down the mountain for about 40 minutes. Coffee came into his life because the farm he bought, to make it his property, already had coffee, and he became interested in taking care of the plants and planting more to sustain his family, which includes his wife and two children. Currently, the farm spans 11 hectares, with most of it being pastures, and also has crops of plantains, yucca, beans, and corn. The coffee area is about 3 hectares. Proudly wearing the green shirt that identifies him as a representative of the Municipal Coffee Growers' Committee of San Andrés and his cherry-red hat with the logo of the National Federation of Coffee Growers, Daniel shares that this is his first time participating in a coffee quality competition. The person who encouraged him to participate and made his achievement of becoming a national finalist possible is his Extension Officer, Engineer Manuel Ricardo Martínez, who insisted so much that Daniel finally decided to give it a try. Together with his eldest son, who helps him on the farm, Daniel got involved in preparing the coffee lot. Although he wasn’t entirely convinced at first, they patiently and lovingly harvested the ripe fruits from their Castillo variety plants, depulped them the same day, and let them ferment a little longer than usual, for 16 hours. After the fermentation, the coffee was washed and dried at home. From the moment of harvest until it was delivered to the Coffee Growers' Cooperative, 15 days passed."Thank God, we made it to the finalists. I am happy and content because I didn't expect it. I participated to see what results I would get, but I didn't expect this," he says with a smile and misty eyes.
