Albeiro Jiménez’s Story: A Coffee Grower with a Passion for Quality and the Future of Coffee
My name is Albeiro Jiménez, a coffee grower from the Siete de Agosto neighborhood, in the heart of the coffee-growing region of Agustín Codazzi. From a very young age, coffee has been a fundamental part of my life, as I was born into a family of coffee growers. At 8 years old, I moved to the Santa Lucia farm, a place that became my home and the stage of my growth. It was here where I finished my studies, got married, and started my family, always working side by side with my parents, who managed the farm. Years later, with hard work and sacrifice, I was able to buy the farm, which is now fully owned by me. Almost 18 years have passed since then, and during all this time, I have been renewing the coffee plantations, which were previously aging and in urgent need of attention.
With the technical support of the coffee grower's committee, which has been essential for improving my crops, I have been able to implement new techniques and agricultural practices that have elevated the quality of my coffee. Thanks to their guidance and expertise, each year my coffee plants become healthier and more productive, which has allowed me to become a finalist in this quality competition. This recognition is a reflection of the effort and dedication I put into my work.
In my home, my wife, my children, and my son-in-law, who helps me with the daily tasks, are my main motivation. Despite the challenges, such as the tragic loss of one of my sons last year, we continue forward with the hope for a better future. My youngest son is studying, and although we face difficulties, such as the poor condition of the roads that make transporting the coffee difficult, we are committed to the development of our farm and our community.
Despite the challenges, I am grateful for the current coffee prices, which have improved compared to previous years when production costs were higher than the income, putting the sustainability of the farm at risk. However, there is still much to be done. My dream is that, in the future, we can have better infrastructure, such as roads in good condition, to facilitate the transportation of coffee and improve our quality of life. I also long to have a coffee brand that represents the region, a high-quality coffee that reflects our tradition and effort. Additionally, we seek access to electricity to be able to dry the coffee on the farm and avoid transporting it wet to the town, which increases costs.
My vision is clear: I want the new generations to be inspired to continue growing coffee. For us, the coffee growers, this work is not just a source of income; it is a legacy of sustainability and a pillar of the economy of our municipality. I am committed to the future of coffee in our region and to continue improving the quality of our product every day.
In this coffee we present, we share a story of effort and also offer a high-quality product, the result of years of dedication and passion for what we do.
