Benjamin Rodríguez’s Story: A Quality Coffee Born from Tradition and Family Effort"
My name is Benjamin Rodríguez, a coffee grower from the Las Vegas neighborhood in Agustín Codazzi, and I am the grandson of Carlos Durán and Carmela, who instilled in me from a young age the love and respect for coffee. I grew up in a family of coffee growers, and together with my wife, Carmen Bautista, and my children, we have worked with dedication to make coffee our livelihood.
Despite the difficulties we have faced over the years, such as the period of violence that forced us to relocate, we have always maintained hope and commitment to coffee cultivation. We returned to our homeland with sacrifice and effort, facing challenges such as bad roads and low prices, which at times threatened our stability. However, we always put into practice the valuable advice and teachings provided by the extension agents from the National Federation of Coffee Growers, which allowed us to grow and improve our coffee plantations. Today, we are not only coffee growers but also cultivation technicians, passing on this knowledge to new generations, like my children, who continue working passionately in the coffee fields.
My parents were coffee growers in several neighborhoods of the Agustín Codazzi municipality, and when I was 7, we moved to the Media Luna district in the municipality of La Paz. From there, we arrived at the Makenkal neighborhood, in a “fire zone.” Over time, my dad lent us 700,000 pesos to buy our first farm in Las Vegas. Years later, we sold that farm and acquired land in the Guamal and Zorrocuco neighborhoods. However, we decided to return to the Las Vegas neighborhood, where I currently have the farm from which this lot for the competition was presented.
Since we arrived at the Las Vegas farm 9 years ago, we have made it a prosperous place. At the farm, my family and I work together, and each of my children has their own coffee lots. Additionally, during peak production times, such as December, we have hired up to 17 workers, generating employment not only for our family but also for our neighbors, indigenous people, and others who come to help us with the harvest. For us, coffee is not just a source of income but also a driver of development for our community.
This year, although the weather slightly affected production due to a cloudy winter, the coffee has recovered thanks to the care and fertilization we perform twice a year, with organic fertilizer and lime, always following the technicians' recommendations. We also care about the environment, protecting water sources and keeping the farm clean by taking the trash to the municipality for proper disposal.
My motivation for submitting the lot that participates in this quality competition is the certainty that our coffee is of excellent quality. The analysis performed by our Coffee Growers’ Committee has shown that our harvest has an excellent cup, which strengthens our confidence in the product we grow. My expectation is to reach first place in this competition, which would be a pride not only for my family but also for my municipality, neighborhood, and region.
This recognition would be an important step toward the possibility of exporting our coffee directly abroad, showcasing the quality of the coffee grown in the Serranía del Perijá, an area that produces coffee with exceptional characteristics. I am deeply grateful to the technician from the Coffee Growers' Committee for encouraging us to participate in this competition and for guiding us through this process, which is already an achievement in itself.
I hope this opportunity benefits not only my farm and family but also our neighborhood, municipality, and the entire region. We are coffee growers of tradition and pride, and our coffee is a testament to the tireless work and passion we put into cultivation.
